WILDER'S HOME RUN, SOLID PITCHING LEAD WILD THINGS TO GAME ONE WIN

WRITTEN BY: MIKE GUISTOLISE

WASHINGTON, PA - The Washington Wild Things opened the Frontier League Championship Series with a 5-2 victory over the Québec Capitales at Wild Things Park on Tuesday night.

Things started rough for left-hander Kobe Foster and the Wild Things, surrendering a solo home run to right fielder Justin Gideon in the second inning to go down 1-0. Shortstop Ethan Wilder got Washington on the board in the bottom of the inning with a game-tying sacrifice fly.

The Wild Things found their groove from there, taking a 2-1 lead in the third inning behind an RBI single from left fielder Wagner Lagrange. Wilder came up with a big solo homer in the fourth to increase the Washington lead to two. Designated hitter Tyreque Reed then drilled another RBI base hit in the fifth to make it 4-1.

Québec answered back in the sixth by getting another solo home run off of Foster, but the Washington starter was able to collect himself to finish the sixth without giving up anything else. The Wild Things took the run back in the home half of the sixth on an RBI single from catcher Ricardo Sanchez.

The Washington bullpen then took over in the seventh and closed the game out by not allowing a run or a hit over the final three frames. Right-handed closer Gyeongju Kim slammed the door in the ninth to pick up his second postseason save.

Foster earned the win while Québec starter Ryan Sandberg took the loss.

The series will continue in Washington on Wednesday, September 11th at 6:05 PM EDT.
