CAPITALES NO-HIT THE CRUSHERS! - FRONTIER DAILY ROUNDUP

CRUSHERS BLANKED BY CAPITALES IN COMBINED NO-HITTER

AVON, OH - The Québec Capitales used three pitchers to throw a combined no-hitter, blanking the Lake Erie Crushers 4-0 on Saturday night.

The Capitales (4-4) got back to .500 thanks to an outstanding effort from their pitching staff on the road against the Crushers (6-2). Québec LHP Ryo Kohigashi induced weak contact up and down the Lake Erie lineup in his five innings of work, handing over the game to RHP Ryan Sandberg in the sixth. Sandberg continued the no-hit effort for the Capitales, throwing three perfect innings on just 27 pitches while striking out three. RHP Andrew Mazaros swept things up by striking out one in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to complete the combined no-hitter. Offensively, Québec DH Marc-Antoine Lebreux and C Tyler Blaum combined to go 5-for-9 at the plate while LF Tommy Seidl chipped in with two RBIs. The win snapped the Crushers' winning streak at six.

The Capitales and Crushers will conclude their weekend series at Crusher Stadium on Sunday at 2:05 PM EDT.

BOULDERS THROW DINGER PARTY TO BEAT JACKALS

PATERSON, NJ - The New York Boulders crushed five home runs to beat the New Jersey Jackals 6-5 on Saturday night at Clover Stadium.

The Boulders (5-2) continued to pad their position at the top of the Frontier League East division with another win on the road against the Jackals (3-4). New Jersey worked its way to a 3-0 lead through the first four innings, but New York once again used the home run ball to get itself back in the game. LF Sam Linscott launched a two-run bomb in the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-2 and C Joe DeLuca tied it in the seventh with a solo shot. New Jersey refused to roll over, cranking back-to-back jacks in the bottom half of the seventh to reestablish a two-run advantage. The Boulders would respond in the ninth with three solo home runs from DH David Vinsky, 3B Chris Kwitzer, and 1B Peyton Isaacson to go back in front 6-5. RHP Dylan Smith would get the save in the bottom half, striking out two in the process.

The Boulders and Jackals will conclude their series in New Jersey on Sunday at 4:35 PM EDT.

BOOMERS FINISH OFF SWEEP OF Y'ALLS

SCHAUMBURG, IL - The Schaumburg Boomers completed their sweep of the Florence Y'alls on Saturday at Wintrust Field.

The Boomers (7-1) have yet to lose a series this season. After sweeping the Y'alls (4-4), Schaumburg has recaptured sole possession of the Frontier League West division. The Boomers had control of this game from the start, launching two homers in the first innings, courtesy of 3B Seth Gray and RF Ryan McCarthy going back-to-back. After scoring again in the second, Gray launched his second home run of the day in the third to make it 5-0 Schaumburg. DH Kyle Fitzgerald followed suit with a home run of his own, putting the Boomers up six. The Y'alls were finally able to get a run across in the fourth, but the Boomers were merciless and continued to dominate Florence's pitching. Schaumburg posted another six runs between the sixth and eighth innings, including another two RBIs from Gray. RHP Jackson Hickert earned the win after tossing five innings of one-run ball, only surrendering four hits while striking out five. RHP Ross Thompson took the loss for Florence.

Seth Gray finished with three hits and five RBIs, bringing his season total to 13, and is currently tied for second in the league for RBIs.

The Boomers are off until they travel to Joliet to take on the Slammers on Tuesday, with a 11:05 AM EDT first pitch. The Y'alls will host the Gateway Grizzlies on Tuesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:42 PM EDT.

KNOCKOUTS SCORE LATE TO BEAT AIGLES

TROIS-RIVIERES, CANADA - The New England Knockouts scored the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to defeat the Trois-Rivières Aigles 4-2 on Saturday.

The Knockouts (2-5) and Aigles (4-3) started the day off by finishing a delayed game from Friday, which was tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the eighth inning. The Aigles were able to score three in the bottom of the eighth to give them their fourth win of the 2024 season, with a 4-1 final.

In the Saturday game, the Aigles got off to a nice start behind RHP Tucker Smith, who retired 11 of the first 12 batters he faced while Trois-Rivières got out to a 2-0 lead. The Knockouts broke through in the sixth when RF Mark Herron Jr. singled to bring in New England's first run. CF Jalen Garcia was able to tie the game in the next inning, with another RBI single. 2B Noah Luciter knocked in the go-ahead run in the top half of the ninth, making the score 3-2. New England was able to add on another insurance run, giving RHP Liam Sullivan his first win of 2024; Sullivan pitched a complete game for the Knockouts, surrendering just two runs while striking out three and walking none. 

The Knockouts and Aigles will conclude their weekend series on Sunday, with a 1:05 PM EDT first pitch.

GRIZZLIES BULLPEN SHUTS DOWN THUNDERBOLTS

SAUGET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies took down the Windy City ThunderBolts on Saturday night by a final of 4-2.

The Grizzlies (4-4) only allowed three hits to the ThunderBolts (4-5), with their bullpen surrendering only one while showing four different relievers. Gateway was able to put up a run in the first inning off an RBI single from 3B DJ Stewart. Stewart repeated the effort with another RBI knock in the third to make it 2-0. The ThunderBolts were able to tie the game with a two-run homer in the fifth, marking the end of RHP Collin Sullivan's day. RHP Nate Garkow, who got the winning decision, came into the game and struck out all four batters he faced to maintain the tie. The Grizzlies got back in front with an RBI base hit from C Jose Alvarez in the sixth and added an insurance run in the eighth. RHP Lukas Veinbergs emerged from the bullpen in the ninth to capture his third save of the season, which is tied for tops in the league.

The Grizzlies will host the ThunderBolts for a rubber match on Sunday. First pitch is at 2:05 PM EDT.

MINERS SHUT OUT TITANS FOR THIRD STRAIGHT WIN

AUGUSTA, NJ - The Sussex County Miners blanked the Ottawa Titans on Saturday at Skylands Stadium, 3-0.

The Miners (4-4) won their third straight game to get back to .500 against the Titans (2-5) behind some excellent pitching. Sussex County started things off in the second inning with a two-run double from 3B Edwin Giordano. The Miners would add to their lead in the off of LF John Mead's solo home run. RHP Mark Moclair became only the second Sussex County pitcher to eclipse five innings pitched, as he went 5.1 with four strikeouts while only allowing three hits en route to his first win. LHP Grant Larson got the loss for the Titans.

The Miners and Titans will conclude their series on Sunday in New Jersey. First pitch is at 2:05 PM EDT.

WILD THINGS WIN CLOSE GAME TO CAPTURE SERIES AGAINST VALLEYCATS

TROY, NY - The Washington Wild Things took a close game against the Tri-City ValleyCats 2-1 on Saturday night.

The Wild Things (4-3) found themselves down early the ValleyCats (3-5) at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, but were able to keep things close thanks to some excellent starting pitching. LHP Kobe Foster allowed just one run through 6.2 innings while striking out five, earning the win in the process. The ValleyCats took a 1-0 in the third inning and kept the Wild Things to just three hits. In the top of the seventh with two outs and a man on, CF Caleb McNeely took the lead for Washington when he launched a two-run home run to right-center. The Wild Things were able to preserve the lead as RHP Gyeongju Kim picked up his second save of the season to close things out in the ninth.

The Wild Things and ValleyCats will play one more in New York on Sunday night. First pitch is at 5:00 PM EDT.

SLAMMERS EVEN SERIES WITH OTTERS

EVANSVILLE, IN - The Joliet Slammers won a pitcher's duel with the Evansville Otters in 10 innings on Saturday night, with a final score of 2-1.

The Slammers (4-4) were able to take a 1-0 lead in the eighth inning before the Otters (3-5) tied it up with two outs in the bottom of the ninth. 3B Antonio Valdez was placed on second as the ghost runner in the tenth for Joliet. With one out, C Peter Zboray gave the Slammers the lead with a single to right that scored Valdez. LHP Cal Djuraskovic closed things out for Joliet with a perfect tenth, leaving the Evansville ghost runner stranded at third. RHP Jake Armstrong was solid for Joliet in his decisionless start, not allowing a run through six full innings while striking out four. LHP David Harrison got the win for the Slammers out of the bullpen, while RHP Michael McAvene took the loss in extras for the Otters.

The Slammers and Otters will have a rubber match at Bosse Field on Sunday. First pitch is at 1:35 PM EDT.
