BOULDERS DEFEAT TRI-CITY IN HIGH SCORING GAME AS QUEBEC PUSHES WIN STREAK TO SEVEN
Tri-City vs New York
The New York Boulders (27-26) smashed a team record nine home runs and tied a pair of other offensive team single game marks in a 23-8 rout of the Tri-City Valley Cats (27-25) on Tuesday at Clover Stadium in Pomona.
David Vinsky and Chris Kwitzer each hit two home runs in the win, while Austin Dennis, Giovanni Garcia, Gian Martellini, Gabriel Garcia and Max Smith each homered once.
The old mark of six home runs in a game was set on Aug. 14, 2018 against the New Jersey Jackals.
The 23 runs tied the team mark set back on July 5, 2017 against the Ottawa Champions; while the 21 hits on the day also tied the team mark, that one set back on June 20, 2021 versus the Jackals.
Martellini hit a two-run homer in the third, his sixth of the year, which was followed by a solo home run by Garcia, his fifth of the season.
In the fourth, Vinsky's solo home run was his ninth of the year; while, later in the frame, Kwitzer smacked a three-run homer, his ninth of the year.
Smith's sixth of the year, a two-run shot, came in the fifth inning and was followed three batters later by Dennis' home run, his fourth of the year, a solo shot.
In the sixth, Garbella set the new team record, with a solo homer in the sixth, his seventh of the season. Vinsky hit his second of the game, a three-run blast, in the seventh, the homer giving him ten on the year..
Kwitzer followed with his second of the afternoon, a two-run shot in the eighth, his 10th of the year.
Every batter in the Boulders' line-up registered at least one base hit and eight of the nine recorded an RBI.
July Sosa picked up the win in relief of starter Robby Rowland for the Boulders. Sosa pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed just two hits and no runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out three as he improved to 2-0 on the season.
Thomas Kretzler was tagged with the loss for the Valley Cats. It was his first decision of the season.
Sussex County vs New Jersey
After what was expected to be a rained-out Tuesday night, the New Jersey Jackals(23-28) and Sussex County Miners(30-23) renewed their rivalry at Yogi Berra Stadium, with Sussex taking the lengthy series opener by a football-esque 16-14 score.
New Jersey trailed 6-1 after two and a half innings as Sussex tallied their half dozen runs off of a combination of Juan Perez (making a spot start) and Austin Smith. The League's most dangerous offense wouldn't let that slight go unanswered.
An Alfredo Marte RBI groundout and some hustle from Justin Wylie to reach base on an error pulled the Jackals to within 6-3 after three innings. In the fifth, a Marte double and a Wylie single made it 6-5 before the home side completed the comeback with a two RBI double from Jason Agresti.
It was a short-lived advantage, however, as Sussex responded with five in the top of the sixth, which would charge Dylan Peiffer (2-1) with the loss.
The Jackals managed to outscore the Miners 7-5 after that rough middle frame, but it wasn't enough to secure the victory. A bright spot for the Jackals was the scoreless ninth frame turned in by Max Maarleveld, pitching on the Yogi Berra Stadium mound for the first time since graduating from Montclair State University, the campus on which stadium sits. Jacob Corn was deemed the most effective reliever for the visitors and earned his first win of the season. After the final out was recorded at 12:15 AM Wednesday, the Miners and Jackals will now meet at 11:05 AM for the middle game of this series.
Empire State vs Quebec
The Quebec Capitales(37-15) swept a doubleheader against the Empire State Greys(3-49) on Wednesday Night at the Stade Canac in Quebec City.
In game 1, the Greys got on the scoreboard first in the first inning with a double off of Ordonez.
Quebec would quickly tie it up in the bottom of the first with a double off of T.J. White. The Greys would regain the lead in the top of the second by scoring two runs making it 3-1.
Jeffry Parra would get the Capitales within one in the bottom of the third with a homerun making it 3-2.
The Capitales would unload in the bottom of the sixth and score five runs to make the score 3-7.
The Greys would score one run in the top of the seventh but ultimately would not be enough to get the win and would lead them to their 4-7 loss.
John Witkowski would get the win for Quebec while Jason Pineda would get charged with the loss.
In Game 2 of the doubleheader, Quebec would get on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the first with a single from T.J White to make it 0-1.
The Greys would tie the game in the top of the second with Christian Naccari reaching first base on a fielder's choice allowing Will Decker to score.
The Capitales would regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth when David Glaude stole third and then proceeded to score on an error to make it 1-2.
There would be no runs scored after that allowing Quebec to win the game.
Jordan Powell would get charged with the loss for the Greys while Miguel Cienfuegos got the win for Quebec.
Ottawa vs Trois-Rivières
Electing to push back their double header a day, the Ottawa Titans (34-18) managed to defeat the Trois-Rivières Aigles(25-26) 12-9 on Tuesday night.
Raphael Gladu got the home side on the board with a two-run double down the right-field line in the bottom half of the first, making it 2-0. Kaleb Schmidt (win, 2-3) got the start for the Titans on Tuesday and escaped through five and a third in the series opener. In his first start with the Titans, Schmidt allowed only four hits over the first four innings, with three going for extra bases.
Following a Rodrigo Orozco RBI groundout in the second that cut the deficit to one, the Titans erupted for an eight spot in the third.
Aigles starter Taylor Lepard (loss, 0-2) walked home three runs before Tyrus Greene, Jackie Urbaez, and Clay Fisher recorded RBI knocks. As Lepard was unable to finish the frame, former Titan Scott Gillespie tried his best to stop the bleeding but the damage had been done at 9-2.
In the fourth, Orozco plated his third of the game with an RBI single to right, scoring Jason Dicochea to make it 10-2.
LP Pelletier blasted his eighth homer of the season with one out in the fifth off Schmidt. Pelletier finished the game 4-for-5 with two runs batted in.
The Titans added two more for good measure in the sixth, as Greene belted his second homer of the season to lead off the frame. Later in the inning with the bases loaded, Gillespie plunked Fisher to score the twelfth Titans run.
Up 12-3 entering the eighth, the Aigles had a big inning of their own, sending 12 to the plate. After Jack Alkire retired Carlos Martinez in the air, the Aigles strung together seven straight hits, making it a three-run game.
Gatineau's Marcel Lacasse brought home two with a double off the wall in right. The former Titans signee now has recorded six of his eight RBI against his former club this season.
Grant Larson came on for the ninth, looking for the final three outs. After getting the first, back-to-back singles turned the lineup over for the dangerous bat in Pelletier. Larson managed to get Pelletier to pop out and bring the Aigles down to their final out. Titans skipper Bobby Brown chose to bring in All-Star Kevin Escorcia, who walked Connor Panas to bring up the potential winning run. Escorcia finished the deal with a strikeout of Juan Kelly to secure the victory.
With their fourth straight win, the Titans continue their series with Trois-Rivières tomorrow for a double header starting at 5:05 p.m. from Stade Quillorama. Following the twin-bill, the Titans and Aigles finish the series on Thursday night. The Titans return home on Friday for the final series of the first half with a three-game set against the Quebec Capitales.
Florence vs Windy City
Seven different Florence Y'alls (20-31) batters had a multi-hit game as the Y'alls dealt early damage to the Windy City (20-30) pitching staff, scoring just enough runs to escape with an 11-9 victory over the ThunderBolts Tuesday morning at Ozinga Field.
The win for the Y'alls is the team's third in a row after losing eleven consecutive contests. Florence has won five of the first six meetings against Windy City this season.
The Y'alls wasted no time getting the offense started when Ray Zuberer III hit the first pitch of the game to right center field for a double, one of his two doubles on the day. Zuberer would later score on a Brennan Price RBI single for the early 1-0 lead.
After Windy City tied it up in the bottom of the first, Zuberer plated a run with an RBI single in the second for a 2-1 advantage. Florence started to blow it open in the third inning with an Anthony Brocato three-run home run, his fifteenth of the season. Florence scored again in the fourth on a Price RBI single and again in the fifth with five runs for an 11-4 lead after five innings. An Ethan Stern home run and RBI hits for Rodney Tennie, Alberti Chavez, and Zuberer highlighted the scoring in the big fifth inning.
Windy City did a nice job of chipping into the deficit all game long, and that stinginess almost resulted in a comeback. Dan Robinson doubled home a run in the third, and Matt Morgan and Bren Spillane had RBI hits in the middle innings to stay competitive. The ThunderBolts scored five unanswered runs combined in the eighth and ninth innings to get within 11-9, but they left two runners on in the ninth to secure the Y'alls win. Brynn Martinez hit a three-run home run as part of the Windy City come from behind efforts.
Billy Damon earns his first win of the season on the mound after five innings and three earned runs allowed. Zuberer had three total hits, as did Alberti Chavez including two doubles of his own. The Y'alls' All-Star selections – Price, Brocato, and Chavez – combined for seven hits and six RBI today. Garrett Christman takes the loss in his third start against Florence this year, surrendering 10 runs in four 1/3 innings. Matt Morgan had three hits and two RBI in his Windy City debut. Jake Boone had three hits as well.
Evansville vs Schaumburg
The Evansville Otters (33-19) defense turned a season-high four double plays Tuesday night to help Austin Gossmann to his second career complete game in a 5-1 win over the Schaumburg Boomers (26-25).
In the early part of the game, Schaumburg had two men on in each of the first two innings but failed to bring a single one home, thanks to Evansville's Gossmann and the defense.
The Otters grabbed the opportunity to strike first in the third, putting together a two-out rally. The rally started with an Elijah MacNamee single and Zach Biermann double before J.R. Davis brought both in with a two-run single.
Within the next at-bat, Steven Sensley brought Davis home on a two-run home run, the 10th home run of the season for Sensley.
Evansville walked out of the third inning with a 4-0 advantage.
In both the third and fourth, Schaumburg had multiple men on yet again but couldn't cash in on any of the opportunities.
In the fifth, Evansville added to their lead as Andy Armstrong scored on a wild pitch, lifting the Otters to a 5-0 mark.
Gossmann faced just two base runners from the fifth to the eighth, double plays ending a few opportunities for the Boomers.
Schaumburg finally struck Gossmann for a run in the ninth with a leadoff solo home run from Braxton Davidson. The comeback attempt would end two batters later with the fourth double play of the night from the Otters' defense.
The 5-1 win gave Evansville their 13th series-opening win of the season.
Gossmann advanced to 4-2 in 2022, allowing just one run on nine hits across all nine innings. The loss fell on Aaron Glickstein, who allowed all five runs on seven hits in his six full innings.
Jeffrey Baez was the sole Otter with a multi-hit day, his ninth multi-hit game of the season.
Washington vs Gateway
The Gateway Grizzlies (28-25) won their fourth straight game on Tuesday night back home at GCS Credit Union Ballpark, getting contributions from many sources in beating the first-place Washington Wild Things (33-19) 8-7 to take the series opener.
It was the Grizzlies' all-stars who shone brightest in a back-and-forth affair in Sauget- after Washington used back-to-back leadoff doubles in the top of the first inning to take a 2-0 early lead, Gateway responded by loading the bases on a triple and two walks for all-star Trevor Achenbach, who lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to make it 2-1. Jay Prather followed with a ground ball to the right side of the infield that plated another run and tied the game up at 2-2.
Washington reclaimed the lead off starter Jared Milch in the third inning on Hector Roa's two-out RBI single at 3-2, but in the bottom of the fourth, also with two outs, all-star outfielder Isaac Benard put the Grizzlies ahead with a two-run home run at 4-3, extending his personal hit streak to 14 games in a row in the process.
The West Division-leading Wild Things bounced back immediately, scoring three more runs in the top of the fifth on back-to-back RBI hits by Wagner Lagrange and Andrew Czech to go ahead 6-4, but in the bottom of the sixth against reliever Kenny Pierson (2-2), it was Gateway who would take the lead for good. After leadoff singles by Benard and Zach Racusin, Achenbach stepped up and launched his team-leading 17th home run of the season out to left-center field, a go-ahead, three-run shot to make it 7-6 Grizzlies. Two batters later, Clint Freeman's RBI double made the score 8-6.
A solo homer by Niko Pacheco in the top of the eighth made it an 8-7 ballgame, and the Wild Things also got the tying run into scoring position in the ninth against all-star pitcher John Murphy, but would not score that runner as Murphy struck out the side for the save.
Achenbach finished 2-for-3 while tying his season-high with four RBIs in the game, while Benard ended up 3-for-4 and was a triple away from the cycle. Freeman also enjoyed a multi-hit night as part of the Grizzlies' 12-hit attack offensively. On the mound, Nick Kennedy (1-0) earned his first win of the season by tossing three shutout innings in relief of Milch.
Joliet vs Lake Erie
The Lake Erie Crushers(23-29) scored six runs over the first two innings of Tuesday night's game at Mercy Health Stadium and came away with a 10-2 victory in their series opener against the Joliet Slammers(26-27).
The Crushers (23-29) have now won three consecutive series openers, and the loss for the Slammers (26-27) was their fifth in their last seven games.
The Crusher offense went to work early, scoring three times on four hits in the bottom of the first inning. It all started on a one out single from Jackson Valera. Kenen Irizarry followed with a double down the line in right, and Kokko Figueiredo drove them both home on a two run single to center. Figueiredo came around to score later in the inning on Austin White's single to left.
Lake Erie plated three more runs in the bottom of the second. Connor Owings started the inning with a single to right and advanced to second when Valera reached on a single. A wild pitch scored Owings before Figueiredo singled to left to score Valera. Kemuel Thomas-Rivera brought Irizarry home later in the inning on a RBI groundout.
The Slammers were able to get on the board in the top of the third, when Tyler Depreta-Johnson belted a solo homer to right, his fourth of the season.
The Crushers added two more in the bottom of the fourth inning. Figueiredo and Thomas-Rivera started the inning with back-to-back singles and they both came around to score on Casey Combs's two out single to center.
Thomas-Rivera struck again for the Crushers with a RBI double in the fifth inning before Irizarry plated Lake Erie's final run on a wild pitch in the seventh.
Gunnar Kines (1-1) turned in one of his best starts of the season, tossing five innings and allowed just a run on five hits while striking out six to score the victory. Cam Aufderheide (4-5) took the loss after surrendering six runs, four earned on eight hits through three innings of work.
Seven Crushers reached safely multiple times on the night. Owings, Irizarry and Figueiredo led the way, as they reached four times. Owings went 2-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Thomas-Rivera went 2-for-4 as well, and has now hit safely in nine straight games.
