QUEBEC'S HISTORIC WIN STREAK COMES TO AN END

Trois-Rivières vs Tri-City 

The Trois-Rivières Aigles (8-10) defeated the Tri-City ValleyCats (12-7) by a score of 19-14 on Sunday evening. 

The ValleyCats would send out right-handed pitcher Olbis Parra for the Sunday evening match up, and the first two batters of the game would go as planned, getting Joe Campagna to ground out and Valibhav Desai to strike out. Parra would get Carlos Martinez to hit a fly ball to Juan Santana that went in-and-out of his glove, and would reach on the error. Raphael Gladu would follow the error with a double down the left field line, bringin Martinez around to score. The former ValleyCat Steve Brown would extend the Aigles lead to three with an opposite field two-run blast. Parra would be able to limit the damage to just three runs after Daniel Angulo would throw out Canice Ejoh who was attempting to steal second to end the inning.

The ValleyCats would begin to chip away at the Aigles lead, scoring one run in the home half of the first on a Brantley Bell RBI double, bringing Jesus Lujano around to score, who reached base on a lead off walk.

The second and third stanzas were much quieter for both teams, as both starters held their oppositions to no runs. Aigles starter Carlo Graffeo would strand the bases loaded with ValleyCats in the second inning, getting Bell to strike out.

After Canice Ejoh was hit by a pitch, Aigles second baseman Ricardo Sanchez would give his team a four-run cushion in the top of the fourth inning with a two-run shot into right center field off of Parra, giving the eagles a five to one lead. 

The 'Cats would answer in a big way in the home half of the fourth inning, bringing 11 different hitters to the plate. Willy Garcia,Daniel Angulo, and Jesus Lujano would reach via the walk, bringing Juan Santana up to the plate. The second baseman would line a single into right center field, bringing Garcia and Angulo around to score. Brantley Bell would record his second RBI of the night after singling home Lujano, while Santana advanced to second. Denis Phipps would follow a Brad Zunica ground out with a walk, loading the bases for Juan Silverio. The ValleyCats third baseman would send a towering shot into left center for a grand slam. Pavin Parks would follow in Silverio's footsteps the next at-bat, hitting a solo shot to right field. Willy Garcia would strike out to cap off the eight-run fourth inning for Tri-City.

The fifth and sixth innings were business as usual for both sides, retiring their respective opposition in order.

ValleyCats reliever Adam Hofacket would pitch a 1-2-3 seventh inning , striking out Campagna and Desai for the first two outs, and getting Martinez to hit a slow roller back to the mound for the third out.

Pavin Parks would lead off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk, and Garcia would follow the shortstop up with a single, bringing Daniel Angulo up to the plate. Angulo would loop a single into shallow center field, bringing Parks around to score and advancing Garcia to third. Jesus Lujano would get in the RBI column with a double to center field, with Garcia coming in to score. Angulo would show off his base running skills to plate the third run of the inning by tagging up on a foul ball caught by the third baseman Campagna in foul territory. The 'Cats would enter the top of the eighth with a 11-5 lead.  

Pete Incaviglia would call on Brac Warren to pitch the top of the eighth inning. Raphael Gladu would single to lead off the inning. The next four batters would reach base via the walk, plating two. The right hander would face five batters, and wouldn't record an out. Trey Cochran-Gill would enter in relief of Warren, trying to limit the damage. He would get Michel Dagenais to strikeout swinging, but then would walk Campagna, plating the third run of the inning. Desai would follow Campagna with a two RBI double, bringing the fourth and fifth runs of the inning to score. The Aigles would cut the 11-5 deficit to just a one-run lead for the ValleyCats. 

Willy Garcia would give Tri-City a 13-11 lead in the home half of the eighth inning, with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to left field. 

Cochran-Gill would come back out for his second inning of work, looking to shut the door on any potential comeback by the Aigles. Conner Panas would lead the inning off with a double. Canice Ejoh would silence the home crowd with a game tying, two-run home run. Cochran-Gill would strike out the next three batters he faced to end the inning. 

Tri-City would go down in order in the bottom of the ninth, giving the crowd their second extra inning game at The Joe this season. 

Valibhav Desai would lead off the 10th inning for the Aigles against Troy Cruz, who entered from the bullpen. The shortstop would lay down a sacrifice bunt, moving the Joe Campagna who was the designated runner over to third.  Following an intentional walk to Carlos Martinez, Raphael Gladu would drop a single into shallow center field, plating Campagna. Cruz would hit Brown and Panas with pitches in back to back at-bats, loading the bases. Canice Ejoh would empty the bases with a triple. Ejoh would score the eighth Aigles run of the inning on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ricardo Sanchez, giving the Aigles the 19-13 lead.  

Brantley Bell would advance to third on defensive indifference in the bottom half of the 10th inning, eventually scoring on a Brad Zunica groundout. Juan Silverio would strike out to end any hopes of a ValleyCat comeback. 

 

Quebec vs New Jersey

The New Jersey Jackals(7-11) defeated the Quebec Capitales(17-4) by a score of 7-4 Sunday afternoon. 

The Jackals got a very strong start by Jorge Tavarez pitching five innings, striking out eight batters and only allowing one earned run on four hits.  

After no hits for either team in the first inning the Jackals opened the scoring in the second with a solo home run by Justin Wylie to take their first lead of the series 1-0. They would later add two runs in the inning with a home run by Jason Agresti and an RBI single by Todd Isaacs after Zak Whalin reached on an error in the prior at bat.

The Capitales would counter the Jackals three run second with two runs of their own in the top of the third. A bases loaded single by Kyle Crowl started the rally. The next at bat, Marc-Antione Lebreux would fly out to Todd Isaacs to end the inning and the Jackals held on to their 3-2 lead. 

The Jackals would add one more run in the bottom of the sixth after a leadoff single by Wylie. He would then advance to third on an error by the Capitales pitcher Michael Austin on Josh Rehwaldt's bunt single. Wylie would later score on a wild pitch. The Jackals would continue to threaten in the inning after a single with no outs by Jason Agresti would knock Austin out of the game with runners on the corners. However, Rehwaldt got thrown out at home on a ground ball in the infield and Whalin grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The Capitales would end up tying the game with a run in the seventh and a run in the eighth. The game tying run came on a balk by Jackals pitcher Austin Smith with a runner on third. Smith would go on to strike David Glaude at the plate to end the inning and leave it tied.

The Jackals took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth as Wylie singled for his fourth hit of the game and then scored on Rehwaldt's home run. Santiago Chirino would then hit an RBI double to give the Jackals a 7-4 lead. Juan Perez would come on to pitch for the Jackals in the ninth and, despite allowing two baserunners, he got a 5-5-3 double play to deliver the Jackals their second home win of the season.

 

Empire State vs New York

The New York Boulders(10-11) defeated the Empire State Greys (0-21) by a score of 12-7 on Sunday afternoon. 

The Greys opened the scoring in the first inning on a Jordan Holloman-Scott RBI single. New York answered with three runs in their half of the first - one on a Max Smith single and two via a MacKenzie double.Martellini led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run, his second of fhe year, that made it 4-1.

The Greys, though, knotted things at 4-4 with three runs in the fourth inning. Willies Estrada started the frame with a solo home run, his second of the year. A bizarre sequence followed that saw the Greys plate two more runs on two singles, three Boulders' errors and a sacrifice fly by John Benevolent.

A Tucker Nathan's run-scoring double gave the Boulders a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth, but the Greys knotted the game at 5-5 in the fifth on a Taigo Sato single. 

The Boulders snapped a 5-5 tie with five runs in the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and one out, Jake MacKenzie drew a walk from Ernesto Huizar to give New York the lead. Francisco Del Valle followed with a two-run single before Gian Martellini doubled to make it 9-5.

Jesus Rosario came on to pitch for the Greys and eventually issued a bases-loaded walk to David Vinsky  that pushed the Boulders' advantage to 10-5. In the seventh, MacKenzie added a pair of insurance runs with a two-run home run, his fourth long ball of the season.

Will Decker added an eighth inning RBI single for the Greys. Jose Mercado had three hits in the loss for the Greys, who also got a pair of hits from Decker, Trey Woosley and Sato.

The loss was the 21st straight to open the Frontier League season for the Greys.

Alex Mack tossed 2 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win for the Boulders, raising his season mark to 2-0. Marco Becerril was tagged with the loss for the Greys, his second of the season versus no wins.

 

Ottawa vs Sussex County Miners 

The Ottawa Titans(14-6) defeated the Sussex County Miners(10-12) by a score of 9-2 on Sunday afternoon. 

The Titans got on the board first in the second inning with an RBI single from Tyrus Greene to score Jacob Sanford. The Miners would commit an error to allow another run to score to make it 2-0. The Titans would continue their scoring in the fourth when the Miners walked in a run. Sussex County threw a wild pitch to allow another run to score, making it 4-0. 

Jacob Talamante hit a fielder's choice to score another run while Rodrigo Orozco hit a sac fly to end the inning making the score 6-0.The Titans would score three more runs in the fifth after the Miners made an error to score two and then Jason Dicochea singled to score Greene ending their score at 9-0. 

The Miners would finally get on the board in the fifth with Nilo Rijo hitting a double to score one and Mikey Reynolds hitting a single to make it 9-2. 

There would be no scoring after that, leading to the Titans 9-2 win. 

Tyler Jandron got the win for the Titans while Ivan Pineyro got charged with the loss for the Miners.

 

Lake Erie vs Florence

The Florence Y'alls (7-13) defeated the Lake Erie Crushers (9-12) at Thomas More Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Y'alls won the series two games to one.
The Crushers scored first on a RBI single by Danny Perez in the top of the second inning. 

Florence would respond with an equalizer on a sac fly RBI by Joe Lytle in the bottom of the second to tie it 1-1. 

Florence would then take the lead on an RBI double by Alberti Chavez in the bottom of the third inning to lead it 2-1. Florence would add on two more runs in the fifth inning on two RBI doubles by Axel Johnson and Chavez to take a 4-1 lead. 

The Crushers would add one more run in the top of the eighth on a solo home run by Bryant Flete (3) but it would be the last run scored of the game making it 4-2. 

Lake Erie's starter Julio Vivas (1-3, 3.54) took the loss in the game allowing six hits, four runs, three earned, two walks and five strikeouts through five innings of work. Merrick Crouse and Kenny Wells came in relief.
Florence's starter Edgar Martinez (2-2, 4.57) earned the win allowing five hits, one earned run, one walk and four strikeouts through five innings of work. Grant Hocking and Joe Dougherty came in relief. Dougherty (3) earned the save in the ninth striking out two batters.

Washington vs Joliet

The Joliet Slammers (10-12) defeated the Washington Wild Things (13-8) at Duly Health and Care Field 5-2 Sunday night. The Washington Wild Things won the series two games to one. 

The Slammers scored all the runs they would need in the bottom of the first inning for their only win of the series. Brylie Ware got the scoring started on an RBI double down the left field line. Lane Baremore then hit an RBI single to left center field making it 3-0. Finally, a two-run home run to left field by Phillip Steering (3) made it 5-0. 

Washington wouldn't hit the scoreboard until the top of the eighth inning. They would put two on the board on a two-run home run by Scotty Dubrule (1) to make it 5-2. Unfortunately, the comeback would stop there. 

Washington's starter Sandro Cabrera (2-1, 3.48) took the loss and allowed eight hits, five earned runs, no walks and six strikeouts in six innings of work. Nick Beardsley would come in to pitch for the remaining two innings. 

Joliet's starter Turner Larkins (1-0, 0.00) would earn the win in his first start of 2022 allowing three hits, no runs, two walks and five strikeouts. Chandler Brierley, Kaleb Honea and Cole Stanton would come in relief. Stanton (1) earned the save in the ninth inning striking out two batters. 

 

Evansville vs Gateway

The Evansville Otters (12-9) defeated the Gateway Grizzlies (11-10) at GCS Credit Union Ballpark 4-2 on Sunday. Evansville won the series two games to one. 

The Grizzlies would take an early lead on a two RBI double by Peter Zimmermann. Unfortunately that is all the runs the Grizzlies would get in the game.

The Otters scored thrice in the top of the third inning on a two RBI single to center field by Zach Biermann and a sac fly RBI off Jeffery Baez to make it 3-2. The Otters would score once more in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI double by Biermann to make it 4-2.

Gateway's starter Brendan Feldmann (2-2, 3.19) took the loss allowing seven hits, four earned runs, one walk and five strikeouts through six innings pitched. Taylor Sugg, Colton Easterwood and Andrew Cartier pitched in relief. 

Evansville's starter Austin Gossmann (1-1, 2.88) earned the win allowing three hits, two earned runs, three walks and four strikeouts through seven innings. Joe Riley and Logan Sawyer came in relief. Sawyer (6) earned the save in the ninth inning striking out the side.
