
TITANS BLANKED BY JACKALS
Paterson, NJ - The Ottawa Titans (41-39) were held off the board for the fifth time this season, losing the middle game of their three-game set to the New Jersey Jackals (49-30) by an 11-0 final on Wednesday.
Scoreless through one, the Jackals' bats exploded for four consecutive multi-run innings against Zac Westcott (loss, 5-7) to pick up the victory. Ti'Quan Forbes homered twice, while Alfredo Marte and Justin Mazzone each left the yard to help the home side post double digits in the second game of the series.
Westcott gave the Titans five innings and allowed ten runs on 11 hits, walking two, and striking out five in the defeat.
David Lebron (win, 3-0) tossed six scoreless innings for the Jackals on Wednesday in his fifth start of the season. The Titans did leave 12 on base in the game, seeing seven runners left aboard in the middle frames, including the bases loaded in the fourth inning.
Out of the bullpen, Thomas Bruss and newcomer Daulton Montagna each recorded scoreless innings. Working for the first time in four games, Erasmo Pinales allowed a tally in his lone inning of work in the eighth.
Michael Fuhrman led the way on offence with the first multi-hit performance of his professional career going 2-for-4. Jason Dicochea extended his hit streak to seven games with a 1-for-5 day.
The Ottawa Titans continue a six-game road trip with the finale of three against the New Jersey Jackals on Thursday night at 6:35 p.m. at Hinchliffe Stadium in Paterson, New Jersey. Following the last two in New Jersey, the Titans will play their final 15 games of the regular season north of the border as they start a weekend series in Trois-Rivières.
WASHINGTON, Pa. (August 16) – Behind dominant work on the mound and consistent offense, Washington clinched a series victory over Gateway with a 5-0 win in a season-low 1:56 contest.
The Wild Things scored first in the bottom of the first inning on Wes Darvill's third homer as a Wild Thing, a two-run shot. This happened after spot starter Stephen Knapp worked a one-two-three first.
Knapp worked the first four innings of the game as the opener for Washington. He faced just one over the minimum, allowing one hit on 46 pitches, 33 of which were strikes. Justin Showalter came on and worked a scoreless fifth before the homestanding club added on.
In the fifth, Scotty Dubrule singled up the middle and was plated on Caleb McNeely's triple. The triple was McNeely's first extra-base hit as a pro and he notched his first RBI before scoring on a passed ball to make it 4-0. The Wild Things added a run in the seventh on an RBI double by Darvill.
Showalter ended up working the final five innings for his seventh win of the season. He struck out three, walked one and allowed three hits.
The shutout is Washington's fifth of the season.
Washington, with the win, has won three of four August games against the Grizzlies and has won back-to-back series openers overall. The Wild Things will have a chance to win the series tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. on Senior Slugger Program Wednesday presented by AARP Pennsylvania.
POMONA, NY — Wednesday night's game between the New York Boulders and Empire State Greys was suspended in the fourth inning due to torrential down pouring at Clover Stadium.
The game went into a rain delay at 7:47 p.m., with the Boulders holding a 2-0 lead thanks to a Chris Kwitzer two-run home run, and was officially suspended over an hour later. The game will resume Thursday at 4:30 p.m., in what will be the Boulders' third doubleheader in seven days.
The game will pick up with Empire State's Manny Garcia batting in the top of the fourth inning against the Boulders' Alex Mack. Garcia will be working with a two-ball, two-strike count at the plate. There are no outs or baserunners.
QUÉBEC, CANADA - Brac Warren hurled his second consecutive quality start to lead the Tri-City ValleyCats (49-31) to a 4-1 victory over the Québec Capitales (50-29) at Stade Canac on Wednesday.
The ValleyCats set the tone early by scoring all four of their runs in their first inning. Ryan Sandberg issued a walk to Cito Culver. Jakob Goldfarb then singled, which moved Culver to second. Oscar Campos laced an RBI single. Ian Walters belted a three-run homer to provide Tri-City with a 4-0 lead. It was his 10th homer of the 2023 campaign..
Québec got on the board in the seventh. David Glaude greeted Blake Workman with a triple, and Marc-Antoine Lebreux picked up an RBI single to cut the deficit to 4-1. Workman collected his third save after settling in, retiring nine of the last 10 hitters he faced, and tossing a season-high three innings.
Warren (3-3) earned his second straight win as a starter. He dominated across six shutout frames, yielding three hits, walking one, and striking out a career-high 13 batters — the most from a 'Cats pitcher this year. He only allowed one baserunner to reach second base.
Sandberg (2-6) received the loss. He threw five innings, giving up four runs on four hits, walking three, and striking out five.
The ValleyCats play the rubber game against the Capitales tomorrow, Thursday, August 17. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
AVON, Ohio — The Schaumburg Boomers gained ground in the race for the Frontier League's West Division title by recording a 6-5 win in sudden death over the Lake Erie Crushers in Ohio on Wednesday night.
Lake Erie was able to start the offense in the first inning for the second consecutive contest, taking a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch. The Boomers tied the game in the second. Chase Dawson opened the second inning with a single before stealing second, his 44th stole base of the season to set the franchise's single season mark. Dawson owns 44 steals in 47 tries to break a tie with Alec Craig who swiped 43 in his first season with the team in 2021. Dawson came in to score the tying run on a fielder's choice from Zach Huffins.
The homestanding Crushers opened a 2-1 lead behind a run in the third but the Boomers were able to score three times in the fifth to take the lead. Travis Holt posted a two-run single with the bases loaded to put Schaumburg ahead while a third run scored on a throwing error. Lake Erie pulled within a run in the bottom of the inning. A two-out RBI single from Sean Cheely in the bottom of the eighth tied the game.
Both teams were able to score the international tiebreaker runner in the 10th with Holt driving home his third of the game with two outs. Lake Erie, playing in sudden death for the first time this year, opted for defense. Blake Grant-Parks opened the inning with an opposite field single to extend his hitting streak to 16 games, longest of the year by a member of the Boomers. Following an intentional walk to load the bases Kokko Figueiredo lifted a sacrifice fly to score the winning run and beat his former team. The sudden death contest was the fourth of the year for the Boomers, who have twice celebrated a walkoff win on the road.
Jake Joyce earned the win. Joyce was the fourth reliever of the contest for the Boomers. Austin Gossmann, claimed off of waivers over the weekend, made his Schaumburg debut on the mound and departed with the lead, working five innings and allowing three runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The offense managed just six hits but came away with the win. Dawson tallied two hits along with Holt.
The Boomers (46-33) pulled to within two games of first by virtue of Gateway being shutout at Washington. The series with Lake Erie will conclude on Thursday night at 6:05pm. RHP Luis Perez (5-4, 4.45) is slated to start for the Boomers against LHP Jonaiker Villalobos (2-3, 7.08).
Florence, KY. – The Evansville Otters blasted three home runs and mounted a four-run comeback to defeat the Florence Y'alls 11-10 Wednesday night at Thomas More Stadium.
Evansville scored six unanswered runs to take a late lead. Trailing 9-5, the Otters put together their biggest road comeback of the season. Jomar Reyes sparked the charge with a two-out, two-run home run in the fifth inning. The Otters then took the lead with three runs in the sixth inning. Gary Mattis notched a single and Jeffrey Baez doubled. Dakota Phillips then played hero with two outs driving in both runs on a base hit to right to give the Otters a 10-9 lead. Evansville added a final run in the eighth as Noah Myers led off with a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly - eventually amounting to the game's deciding run. The Y'alls trailing 11-9 in the ninth plated a run on a sacrifice fly and the tying run reached second but Jake Polancic found the final out on a game-ending popout. Johan Castillo earned the win for the Otters in his debut with Evansville. The lefty pitcher pitched 2.1 scoreless innings with a trio of strikeouts. Kevin Davis worked two scoreless innings, allowing just one baserunner before Polancic earned his 13th save of the season in the ninth. The first four innings of baseball featured numerous back and forth swings. Noah Myers led off with a walk and would come around to score the first run of the game in the first inning. Florence responded with three runs in the bottom of the first inning on three walks and two singles. Myers responded with a two-run home run to right field tying the game in the second frame. Phillips joined the power party with a massive 411-foot homer in the third inning to give the Otters a 5-3 lead. The Y'alls then chipped across a run in the third inning. They then took a four-run lead with five runs scored in the fourth inning courtesy of two home runs, three singles and two walks - all with two outs. Eight of nine Otters scored a run Wednesday night as Evansville totaled 12 hits with six going for extra bases. Myers led the way with two hits, three runs, and two RBIs. Baez totaled a three-hit night with two runs and Phillips batted in four runs with three hits and a run. Evansville plays for the series against Florence on Thursday evening with a 5:34 PM CT first pitch from Thomas More Stadium. The game can be heard on the Evansville Otters Digital Network.
