BOULDERS BOUNCE BACK AGAINEST AIGLES TO AVOID SWEEP

Trois-Rivieres, Quebec - The New York Boulders ignited an offensive onslaught Wednesday night, crushing the Trois-Rivieres Aigles in a 16-2 final score.

The Boulders (20-15) dropped both games off a doubleheader against Trois-Rivieres (12-23) on Tuesday, but managed to bounce back with a dominating win. New York tallied 18 hits in the win — nearly twice as many as it recorded in both games Tuesday combined.

Seven Boulders players recorded multiple hits in the win, led by Giovanni Garbella, who finished 3 for 5 with a home run, four RBI, and two runs scored. Thomas Walraven also homered for New York, while adding three RBI to his stat line. Tucker Nathans, Chris Kwitzer and Joe DeLuca each drove in two runs for the Boulders.

New York starter Aaron Dona allowed only one run in six innings of work to earn his third win of the season. Ryder Yakel earned his first save of the season after allowing just one run in three innings in relief.

QUÉBEC, CANADA - The Tri-City ValleyCats (20-15) held off a comeback in the middle innings from the Québec Capitales (17-17), and won 6-4 on Wednesday at Stade Canac.

The new ValleyCats lineup configuration proved to be a success as they opened the scoring in the first. Pavin Parks drew a walk off Stephen Chamblee. Carson McCusker singled before Trey Hair laced an RBI double. The reigning Frontier League Player of the Week in Aaron Altherr lifted a sac fly to bring in McCusker, which also advanced Hair to third. Jakob Goldfarb did his job by putting the ball in play, and picked up an RBI groundout to give Tri-City a 3-0 lead.

Québec responded in the bottom of the first. Marc-Antoine Lebreux singled off Dwayne Marshall. Lebreux stole second, and came around on a T.J. White RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1.

Tri-City extended its lead in the fourth. Altherr reached on an error from Justin Gideon. Goldfarb followed suit, cranking his second homer of the season to pull the ValleyCats ahead, 5-1. The 'Cats primary catcher is finding his groove at the plate, belting his second homer in as many days, and registering his second three-RBI effort in the last five games.

The Capitales retaliated in the bottom of the fourth. Juremi Profar led off with a single. Gideon walked and Bryan Leef was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Tyler Blaum plated two with a single. Afterward, Lebreux had a base hit to knock in Leef, and make it a 5-4 affair.

Marshall was handed a no-decision. He tossed four frames, yielding four runs on six hits, walking three, and striking out four.

Tri-City collected an insurance run as Parks clobbered a solo home run in the fifth. His sixth long ball of the season gave the ValleyCats a 6-4 advantage.

The two-run lead was more than enough for a lights-out bullpen. Elliot Carney (1-0) earned the win after working around a pair of walks in the fifth to hurl two scoreless frames, while matching a season-high with five strikeouts. Afterward, Greg Veliz twirled two shutout frames, allowing a hit by pitch, and ringing up two batters. Reymin Guduan then pitched in the ninth, giving up a walk, and striking out one to record his fourth save of the year.

Chamblee (1-4) received the loss. He threw six innings, yielding six runs, five earned on five hits, walking two, and striking out two.

AVON, Ohio — One night after being shutout by the Schaumburg Boomers, the Lake Erie Crushers returned the favor on Wednesday night at Mercy Health Stadium, as they tossed a three hit shutout in a 4-0 win.

The victory for the Crushers (16-19) marked their fifth shutout victory of the season, while the loss for the Boomers (21-13) was just their sixth in 17 road games this season.

The combination of JD Hammer (1-1), Joan Gregorio, Brayden Bonner and Trevor Kuncl combined to toss the three hit shutout for the Crushers. Hammer picked up the win in his fourth start of the season. He pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just a pair of hits, walked two and struck out three. Gregorio allowed a hit and struck out three over two scoreless innings of relief in his Lake Erie debut, while Bonner and Kuncl both tossed perfect innings in relief.

Schaumburg's best chance to score came in the top of the third when the game was still scoreless. With runners at the corners and one out, Gaige Howard hit a fly ball to left field that was caught by Jiandido Tromp near the line. Alec Craig attempted to tag up and score but Tromp threw a perfect strike to the plate and Craig was tagged out by Crusher catcher John Tuccillo to end the inning.

Lake Erie capitalized on that momentum very quickly in the bottom of the third. Tyree Bradley started the inning with a triple to right field, and he came around to score just a few pitches later on Tuccillo's sacrifice fly.

The Crushers plated two big insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Sean Cheely began the inning with a single before stealing second and third. Jarrod Watkins reached on a walk and stole second, before Jack Harris belted a two out single center to bring Cheely and Watkins home.

Lake Erie added one final run in the bottom of the seventh. Tromp began the inning with a single to center, and he came around to score the game's final run on Cheely's two out RBI base hit to center.

Schaumburg's starting pitcher, Kobey Schlotman (5-3), who had one his previous five outings, was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on four hits while issuing one walk and fanned seven batters through six innings. The Boomers' lead off hitter, Gaige Howard, saw his 33 game on base streak come to an end after he went 0-for-4 on the night.

Cheely and Tromp paced the Crushers offensively, as they both hit safely two times on the night.

The Crushers will finish their series with the Boomers at Mercy Health Stadium on Thursday night. Lefty Kyle Seebach (1-2, 4.91) will get the start for the Crushers and the Boomers will counter with right-hander Aaron Glickstein (2-2, 2.89). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Florence, KY (June 21, 2023) – The Gateway Grizzlies got a "quality start" on the mound on Wednesday night against the Florence Y'alls from Joey Gonzalez (3-4), but were no-hit for the first five innings and could not get the tying run across despite opportunities to do so in a 7-3 loss at Thomas More Stadium, the team's third straight defeat.

Brennan Price's two-run home run in the first inning staked the home team to a 2-0 lead, but that was the only scoring in the game until the seventh inning. Gonzalez locked down for the Grizzlies on the mound, retiring 17 of the final 19 batters he faced for the rest of his start, striking out four, walking one, and only surrendering one more hit in the contest to keep the Grizzlies' offense within striking distance.

But Gateway could not get the big hit they needed against Edgar Martinez, as despite the Florence starter walking five and hitting two more batters, they were no-hit until the sixth inning. In that frame, D.J. Stewart broke up the no-no with a leadoff single to right field, and a walk and fielder's choice loaded the bases with no one out, putting the tying run in scoring position. But a strikeout and a double-play ground ball ended the biggest threat to score in the contest.

The Grizzlies would get on the board in the next inning against reliever Michael Kirian, with Jairus Richards and Andrew Penner reaching base on singles to lead off, then stealing third and second base, respectively, before Gabe Holt put Gateway on the board with a sacrifice fly and made the score 2-1. But again, the Grizzlies were unable to tie the score despite having the tying run in scoring position in both the seventh and the eighth, and in the bottom of the eighth, Florence scored five runs on three consecutive two-out hits off Zach Blankenship, taking a 7-1 lead.

Peter Zimmermann cranked a two-run double in the top of the ninth to get the Grizzlies within four, but that was as close as they got as they stranded 12 runners on base in total, dropping their third straight game and the series with the loss. Gateway will look to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Y'alls on Thursday, June 22, at 5:34 p.m. CT, sending Lukas Veinbergs to the mound before they return home to Grizzlies Ballpark for the weekend.
