GATEWAY’S GABE HOLT WINS THE SEASONS INAUGURAL PLAYER OF THE WEEK, SCHAMBURG’S LUIS PEREZ TAKES PITCHER OF THE WEEK

May 15, 2023 – The opening weekend of the 2023 Frontier League season saw 255 runs across 48 games, 27 of which were scored by the Gateway Grizzles en route to a two games to one series victory over Florence. Gabe Holt served as the catalyst for the Grizzles out of the leadoff spot, the Texas Tech product and former Milwaukee Brewers farmhand came out of the gates red hot, slapping four base hits and collecting three RBIs in the Grizzles opening night 13-7 romp.

Holt didn't stop there. On Friday the speedy second baseman collected five base hits including a double and a stolen base as the Grizzles racked up an eye-popping 21 hits to take game two against Florence. The former Red Raider finished the weekend 9 for 15 from the plate, with two doubles and two stolen bases to go along with six runs scored.

Holt takes his three game on base streak back to southern Illinois where the Grizzles open their home campaign against Schaumburg on Tuesday night.

Our first pitcher of the week, Luis Pérez, hails from Sabana Grande de Palenque, Dominican Republic and is on stop ten of his baseball odyssey in the US.

On Friday night in stormy Chicagoland, Schaumburg Boomers manager Jaime Bennett handed the ball to the veteran righty and by the time he got it back, Pérez had fanned 11 through six innings of work, allowing only one run and four baserunners. Bennett's bullpen held up their end of the bargain, nailing down a 3-1 victory for the Boomers that went ten innings.

Next, Pérez and the Boomers will travel south down I-55 to take on the scalding hot Gateway Grizzles. The Grizzles will likely avoid Pérez however, as the Dominican righty is next slated to pitch on Friday against the same Windy City team he dominated in his first start of the season.
