VALLEYCATS SIGN MLB VET, WBC PARTICIPANT

TROY, NY - On Friday, the Tri-City ValleyCats announced several roster moves headlined by the signing of outfielder and MLB veteran Aaron Altherr. Drafted in the ninth round of the 2009 MLB Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies, Altherr has appeared at the major league level for three MLB clubs: the Philadelphia Phillies, the San Francisco Giants, and the New York Mets. The 32-year-old centerfielder has played a total of 359 games in Major League Baseball after debuting in 2014. Altherr appeared for the Phillies in parts of six seasons before splitting time between three MLB organizations in 2019. Altherr spent the 2020 and 2021 seasons in the KBO with the NC Dinos. In two seasons in Changwon, South Gyeongsang, Altherr tallied 63 home runs with 192 runs batted in and a .275 batting average.

The team also announced that 2022 ValleyCats utility man Jakob Goldfarb is set to return to the team fresh off of his appearance in the World Baseball Classic with Team Israel. Goldfarb was signed by the 'Cats midway through the 2022 campaign and had his contract purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks after just one game in Tri-City. The 26-year-old provides the 'Cats with speed and versatility, having the ability to roam the outfield and appear behind the plate.

The ValleyCats added pitching depth in two additional roster moves. The team acquired RHP Matt Dunaway in exchange for RHP Joey Gonzalez in a trade with the Gateway Grizzlies, and bolstered their starting rotation with the signing of RHP Dwayne Marshall. Dunaway, a relief pitcher, spent the 2022 season with the Sioux Falls Canaries of the American Association after completing his collegiate career at Western Oregon University. Dunaway registered a 3-1 record with a 2.38 earned run average in 20 appearances out of the bullpen for the Canaries. Marshall, a staple of the Sussex County Miners' starting rotation throughout the past two seasons, registered an 11-3 record with a 2.67 earned run average, tallying  111 strikeouts in 118 innings pitched in 2022, earning him a trip to the 2022 Frontier League All-Star Game in Washington, Pennsylvania.

The Tri-City ValleyCats will continue to build their 2023 roster ahead of the start of the Frontier League's 2023 Spring Training on April 27th. The team will play multiple exhibitions ahead of Opening Day on May 12th. Spring Training exhibitions will be announced at a later date.
